Vocaloids are a popular song tool used almost all over the world and are essentially computer voice banks used to make songs. Oftentimes, people will give these voicebanks a story, personality, and a physical appearance to make these vocaloids more likeable. Kasane Teto, which is the name of this specific vocaloid, was created as an april fools joke and never meant to gain the popularity she has today. A group of people collaborating on the public Japanese forum, twochannel, created the appearance and traits of Teto during april fools, but she soon got a voice bank about 5 days afterwards.
Teto’s first song debut was in June, and from there she gained popularity rather quickly. In a survey done in 2016, she was the second most used vocaloid for songs. Recently, she’s gained a resurgence in popularity, with many songs or voice lines popping up all over social media. Tik Tok seems to be the one place that her content pops up most frequently, although she also was used to create a few new songs like Bird Brain, Mesmerizer, Spoken For, and more that have recently gained traction among the community. Overall, her popularity surprised a lot of people, who could have never predicted what their april fools joke would become in the future.
